AI Receptionist vs. AI Sales Agent: What’s the Difference?

A receptionist answers. A sales agent qualifies, books, and leaves a file the team can take over. Most businesses need the second one and buy the first.
Buyers use “AI receptionist” and “AI sales agent” as if they were the same SKU. They are not. One protects the phone. The other moves a commercial file.
What an AI receptionist is for
A receptionist answers, takes a message, and routes. Hours, address, “someone will call you back.” That is useful when the job is coverage: after-hours overflow, a second line, a script that must not sell.
It is the wrong tool when the inquiry already has intent — a kitchen form, a shower size, a “can I get a price.” Sending those people into a message pad is how you pay for ads twice.
What a sales agent has to do
A sales agent starts from known fields, asks only for missing facts, and aims at a next step the business already runs: designer consult, measure, showroom visit. The conversation is stored. Staff can take over without asking the customer to repeat themselves.

A quick test
- If success is “nobody missed the phone,” you are shopping a receptionist.
- If success is “the right next step was offered and logged,” you need a sales agent.
